OUTLINE:

  1. Human Resource Management- An Overview
    Session 1
    This session provides an introduction to the role of the human resource function in today's environment and focus on identifying contemporary strategies for maximizing individual and organization performance. Topics touched on will include business literacy, diversity, performance management, self-directed teams and organization development.  Perspectives on ethical and international issues will also be explored.
  2. Training and Development
    Sessions  2 & 3
    Employee training and development are critical to an organization's success in today's rapidly changing world. These sessions present practical techniques for developing and implementing successful training programs. Topics include linking training to organizational goals, objectives, and strategies; cost/benefit analysis of training, training needs assessment; training design considerations and learning principles; training methods and processes; and training evaluation. Relevant laws and regulations will also be covered.
  3. Employee Selection & Placement
    Sessions  4 & 5
    One of the most vital aspects of human resource management is building a highly-skilled workforce through effective staff planning, development, expansion and replacement. These sessions provide you with a variety of strategies and practices for recruiting and selecting valued personnel. Topics include legal considerations, recruitment strategies, interviewing methods, assessment centers, making the best job match, conducting reference checks, documentation and selection. Relevant laws and regulations covering selection and placement will also be covered.
  4. Compensation and Benefits
    Session 6
    In this session you will review approaches for determining and implementing equitable wage and salary programs. The relation of pay to performance is examined including methods for designing, implementing and monitoring fair and objective performance appraisal systems, as well as methods for the effective use of incentives and bonuses to enhance performance.
  5. Employee and Labor Relations
    Session 7
    This session covers employer to employee relations with special emphasis on labor management relations in the private sector. Government regulation of labor relations including employee rights and unfair labor practices; the shifting nature of bargaining power; the philosophy, policy and operation of collective bargaining; impasse procedures including mediation, administration of union contracts including grievance arbitration; and special problems inherent in public sector labor relations will be covered.
  6. Conducting Workplace Investigations
    Session 8
    Conducting internal investigations into employee misconduct is imperative for business and legal reasons. This session will provide an overview of relevant laws and an interactive opportunity to hone your skills. You will learn what to expect when a governmental entity is involved in the investigation and how the company can become a part of the solution.  Learn how to avoid common legal pitfalls that create additional risk for liability.
  7. Health, Safety and Security
    Session 9
    Employers are responsible for the health, safety and security of their employees. They must also be sensitive to the special needs of physically challenged employees. Human resource professionals are expected to provide other managers with information on federal and state requirements in these areas. Legal and regulatory factors, practices, enforcement, and remedies relative to workplace health, safety, and security will be covered in this session.
  8. Strategic HR Management
    Session 10
    Putting it all together, this course will focus on integrated application of the HR functions and the role of HR in strategic management.  Strategies for achieving successful organizational and individual change will be developed and the future of organization design will be explored.
